One of the greatest basketball players of all time has a rare form of Leukemia.  It’s called chronic myeloid leukemia and is known as CML.  When Jabbar was diagnosed with the disease last December, he thought that it was just a matter of time before his life would b over.  But, his doctor informed him that he has the possibility of still living a full life.  CML is treatable with proper medication and consistent monitoring of the blood.  Jabbar is managing his disease by taking oral medication.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Interview

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is a man with a lot of pride.  Instead of felling sorry himself, he is spreading awareness about CML.  He is a spokesman for Novartis, a pharmaceutical company that makes medicine to treat CML.  Over 22,000 people in the U.S. are living with the disease.  CML is normally diagnosed in people in their mid- to late 60s, and in most cases affects more men  than women.
