John Wall dunks at Jordan All Star game.

John Wall debuted for the Kentucky Wildcats yesterday in a 72 to 70 win over Miami of Ohio.  Wall was forced to miss the first game of the season due to his suspension by the NCAA for accepting improper benefits from his AAU coach.  In his debut, Wall did not disappoint and proved that he was worth the wait.

The 6-4 195 pound point guard led his team to victory with 19 points and 5 assists.  He shot 4-9 from the field including 1-2 from three point range.  What impressed me the most though, was Wall’s ability to get to the free throw line.  He attempted 14 free throws (the most in the game) and made 10.

Wall showed great poise, which is a trait that all great point guards share.  He realized that he couldn’t do it all by himself and he made plays for others.  And when the game was on the line, he made a play for himself by sinking the game winning shot at the buzzer.  Can you say “Clutch Performer”?

The one negative that I have to talk about is Wall’s 5 turnovers.  Many freshman point guards commit turnovers no matter how good they are.  Wall will learn from his mistakes as he gets more experience.  I doubt that turnovers will become a major issue with Wall.

Wall, who is considered by many to be the best player in his class, is drawing many comparisons to NBA player Derrick Rose because of his size, strength, speed, and his ability to get to the basket at will.  In fact, many who have coached both players say that Wall is faster and could possibly be the better player.  If high school basketball players were still eligible to enter the NBA draft, Wall would have been picked #2 overall.  Actually, if the Clippers (the Clippers are stacked at the guard position) didn’t have the first pick, he would have possibly gone #1 overall.

Wall will be a one and done player.  He is that good.  I guarantee that he will enter the NBA Draft after this season, barring injury of course.  John Wall is a good player and I look forward to following his career.
